What will be taught?

The Psalms began the third section of the Jewish canon, the Khetuvim or "Writings". There are 150 in Christian Bibles, 147 in Jewish Tanakhs (TaNaK, A Jewish acronym for Torah, Neviyim and Khetuvim = "Law, Prophets and Writings").

We begin the course with the background to the Psalms, their poetic style both acrostics, Hebrew parallelism and apparent lack of rhyme or metre.

The first Psalms covered are Psalms 1 & 2, said by Jewish tradition to have been one Psalm originally. We move on later to some of the alphabetical acrostic Psalms (not just Psalm 119) and also to famous Psalms such as Psalm 22, 23 and 51.

We explore the Hebrew language of contemplation, praise, poetry, lament and messianic expectation.

The Hebrew Alphabet is taught as we go and all the grammar is covered in context without any verb tables to learn. Each Hebrew word is exhaustively examined and its meaning explained. A commentary from a Hebrew perspective and Jewish & Christian sources is provided.

No prior knowledge of Hebrew or particular religious affiliation is required and the emphasis will be upon fun and learning, in other words, an inductive and interesting approach to deepening your biblical understanding.

Each class will usually be independent of the last, so you can start anytime, and always do catch up via the tapes or self-study course.
